Estimate effectively - Operate profitably.

Successful Subcontractors depend on reliable information obtained via the takeoff and estimating process.  Many years ago, Mike Litz, the founder and manager of DMI, developed myriad methods and systems that maximize both speed and accuracy throughout the construction estimating process.  Mike has been achieving takeoff, estimating, and project management excellence for more than 30 years.

In 2003, DMI started publishing a great deal of Mike's knowledge in dynamic format.  DMI Databases for Quick Bid enable users to immediately launch state-of-the-art estimating capabilities.

More recently, DMI published some dynamic data for Excel that Mike developed.  The valuable, yet very economical data found in The Metal Stud Production Rate Calculator enables Excel users to gain construction estimating proficiency without first paying for costly, construction-estimating software.

DMI Seminars and Consulting Services have educated construction professionals working in most states, plus several countries outside the United States.  Whether they previously estimated with paper and pencil, Excel, or various, proprietary construction-specialty database systems, DMI clients will attest to the following:

DMI seminars impart the knowledge and teach the skills necessary to radically improve daily work performance during the selective bidding process and project management.

More specifically, DMI clients improve both speed and accuracy when performing the following tasks:

  • Takeoff & Estimating / Bidding
  • Bid Break-down / Project Analysis
  • Material Procurement / Stocking Lists
  • Production Schedules / Labor Analysis
  • Schedule of Values / Billing
  • Revisions / Change Orders

DMI's methods and techniques are easy to learn because they are intuitively natural to implement.  The specialty trade contractors who benefit the most include:

  • Light Gage Structural Steel Contractors
  • Rough Carpentry Contractors
  • Casework and Millwork Contractors
  • Insulation Contractors
  • Doors and Hardware Contractors
  • Metal Stud Framing Contractors
  • Wallboard and Drywall Taping Contractors
  • Acoustic Ceiling Contractors
  • Painting and Wallcovering Contractors
  • Division 10 Contractors

The largest state capital in the U.S., Phoenix, also ranks 6th among the largest U.S. cities.  Most state capitals rank either 1st or 2nd within their state.  Austin, the 4th largest city in Texas, also ranks 4th among capital cities in the U.S.A.

Honolulu takes the largest share of its state's population. Each of the top ten capitals also stands as largest city in its state, with one exception: Lincoln, Nebraska ranks distant 2nd to Omaha, Nebraska.

Ranked 32nd among capital cities, Springfield, IL ranks only 208th among the largest cities in the United States; 33rd ranked Albany, NY and seventeen other state capitals did not qualify for that list of largest U.S. cities.

Together, the populations of Pierre, SD and Montpelier, VT comprise a minute portion (less than 0.01%) of the United States; yet within their respective states, 7th-ranked Pierre (1.79%) and 11th-ranked Montpelier (1.29%) bear greater significance than 12th-ranked Harrisburg, PA (0.39%) and 24th-ranked Annapolis, MD (0.64%).

The population data on this page illustrates a basic fact: Significance is relative.  Many (probably most) specialty-trade building contractors routinely ignore relatively significant aspects of construction takeoff and estimating; keeping so busy counting trees, the true value of the forest escapes their grasp.
